Tangier
The gateway city where Africa meets Europe at the Strait of Gibraltar, with a storied international history, a hilltop Kasbah, and views across to Spain.
About Tangier
Tangier sits at the narrowest point of the Strait of Gibraltar, just 14 kilometers from Spain, and has been a crossroads of cultures for over two thousand years. From 1923 to 1956, the city held a unique “International Zone” status governed by multiple foreign powers, which drew writers, artists, and diplomats and left a lasting cosmopolitan character still visible in its architecture and mixed European-Moroccan atmosphere. The hilltop Kasbah and old Medina overlook the busy port and the Bay of Tangier, while a short drive west leads to the dramatic cliffs of Cape Spartel and the ancient Caves of Hercules. Tangier is also the natural starting point for trips south to the blue city of Chefchaouen or the artistic coastal town of Asilah.
